Seven-spotted Ladybug "Coccinella septempunctata" Every time I research on a species some questions emerge. The one that strikes me the most about this insect is: should I call it a Ladybug or a Ladybird?<br />

Every time I research on a species some questions emerge. The one that strikes me the most about this insect is: should I call it a Ladybug or a Ladybird?
(I have found the two names for the same species)

  1. Either name is fine. I think it's the difference in naming between UK English and American English.
    Ladybug, Ladybird, and Lady Beetle are all valid.

Coccinella septempunctata is the most common ladybird in Europe. Its elytra are of a red colour, but punctuated with three black spots each, with one further spot being spread over the junction of the two, making a total of seven spots, from which the species derives both its common and scientific names.
