  1. What a cute little thing! With that long body it almost looks like a weasel of some kind. Are these wild in your area? Posted 12 years ago
    1. Yes they are, but unfortunately they are endangered. The shape of the body somewhat reminds of the least weasel, but there are many differences. That is if they stay long enough outside the borrow to have a closer look. They get scared very easily and disappear.
      These guys live around the Sveshtari royal tomb, a place known as Ginina Mogila or Gina's Mound. It is a very interesting UNESCO world cultural and historic heritage site. Hopefully, they will be protected as well.

The European ground squirrel, also known as the European souslik, is a species from the squirrel family, Sciuridae. It and the speckled ground squirrel are the only European representatives of the genus "Spermophilus".
