  1. I LOVE this influx of hoppers! Great job with the IDs. Posted 4 years ago
    1. Hardly any moths at nght but a lot of little hoppers. I've got two others like this one but with different markings on the head and thorax and an olive green color. Working on those for a while but no success yet. Posted 4 years ago
      1. I've only been seeing a couple moths a night on the nights when I turn on my light. Lots of caddisflies still, though. Posted 4 years ago
        1. Our ponds and streams are drying up from drought so that's afffecting caddisflies here. The stream by my house is mostly pools of stagnant water something that has never happened here before. We are in year two of drought. Pretty terrible. I guess with fewer moths I'm able to see more leafhoppers but even they are sparse. Upland grass leafhopper species are almost non-existant right now. Posted 4 years ago
          1. Ugh, sorry to hear that. It hasn't been super wet here, but so much better than last year when we were in drought conditions. I hope you get some rain! We have the hurricane heading our way tomorrow and are expecting up to 8+ inches. I'm happy for the rain as it will be good for mushroom season, but I wish it wasn't quite so much. Posted 4 years ago
            1. Looks like the hurricane will hit Long Island and then Connecticut. Too much rain and wind! Be safe. Posted 4 years ago
              1. Yep, the storm is here. We are a bit to the west of it, so shouldn't get too much wind. But, we are being slammed by the rain...expecting up to 10" in my location now. My family in Rhode Island has already lost power from the high winds on the eastern side of the storm. Posted 4 years ago
                1. I grew up in CT in the 60s before coming to MN and I only remember one hurricane there. It wasn't even a hurricane by that point but there was a lot of wind and rain. It didn't happen in the summer though but in late September. I am glad you are safe. Posted 4 years ago
                  1. Thanks. We ended up getting about 6 inches of rain from this storm. Hardly any wind. I grew up in RI, and we got more hurricanes there. I don't miss it though, lol. It seemed fun as a kid...probably because it meant school would be canceled ;P. Posted 4 years ago
                    1. I was always glad to get a day off from school! Posted 4 years ago
                      1. Me too :) Posted 4 years ago
  2. Starting a new thread to ask if you are safe from the wildfires? I read that the MN fires have doubled in size and are creating pyrocumulus clouds. I know you said above that it has been super dry where you live...Have you gotten any rain at all? Hope you are safe <3. Posted 4 years ago
    1. I am located about 90 miles south of the Greenwood Lake fire so am pretty safe. There have been some small fires in the my county though. The DNR has listed my county and those around it as in "severe to extreme drought". The other day I was in my woods and saw that aspen and birch tree leaves were wilting. But we got about a half inch of rain on Tuesday and that has perked things up a bit. More rain is possible Friday and Saturday.

I worry about my woods and those around it because over the past decade many spruce and balsam fir have died from a heartwood fungus and these dead trees are good fuel for a fire. The good thing about those trees dying though is that it has opened up space for red maples, pines, and oaks.

This morning the air smelled good but about 90 minutes later I could smell smoke from the fires in northern MN.

      1. Ugh, so sorry to hear all this, but I'm glad you are safe. Hope you stay that way -- and your land too. Posted 4 years ago
