Papilio machaon - Young caterpillar, lateroventral

The other day Jeanette spotted a Papilio machaon in the garden - I never saw it, but today two of these little caterpillars were crawling about on Hogweed near where she had spotted the beauty :o)

  We saw an observation of caterpillars from someone in a garden on the other side of town from about a month ago or so, figuring that's where the visiting butterfly may have come from (it came by on two separate days). Never occurred to us that it was looking for a spot to start a second generation... hope the little ones survive :o) Posted 4 years ago

The Old World swallowtail

"Papilio machaon", the Old World swallowtail, is a butterfly of the family Papilionidae. The butterfly is also known as the common yellow swallowtail or simply the swallowtail. It is the type species of the genus "Papilio". This widespread species is found in much of the Palearctic and in North America.
