      1. True. I did find something weird. I took it as a challenge to find a common name yet eol.org doesn't recognize Salpingus planirostris at all. Then I queried gbif.org to discover the synonym Curculio planirostris. Which does find a match at eol.org and is listed as preferred name. Yet it doesn't look like this is widely recognized.

        Ah well.

Salpingus planirostris is a beetle in the family "Narrow-waisted Bark beetles" (Salpingidae). The vernacular names for this family in German (Scheinrüssler) and Dutch (Platsnuitschorskevers) highlight another characteristic. The conspicuous flattened snout that reminds somewhat of various forms found in Weevils.
