Southern Lapwing (Vanellus chilensis) A Southern Lapwing I saw yesterday when I visited my current favourite birding spot. While this is a common bird I think this is my best photo of it yet. I also saw many, many Saffron Finches, as well as quite a lot of Fork-Tailed Flycatchers, a bird I have dreamed of seeing for many years as they are currently in the process of their annual upward migration to escape the South American winter. Additionally, I also saw quite a bit of native plants which I have never previously seen before such as Lantanas and a couple different species of Hibiscus. The Southern Lapwing is a wader in the family Charadriiformes. It is a common and widespread resident throughout South America, except in densely forested regions, the higher parts of the Andes and the arid coast of a large part of western South America. This bird is particularly common in the basin of the River Plate. It has also been spreading through Central America in recent years.
