European Peacock Macro

This is kind of a batman perspective, I was below the butterfly, shooting up. I used HDR to bring out more detail in its dark wings.

  1. Could also be a Red Admiral, i'm not entirely sure with its wings closed like this. Posted 12 years ago
  2. The comma has a very specific white comma-shaped spot on the hindwings which is missing here. It doesn't look like a Red Admiral either, which also has a whitish spot on the edge of the hindwing. I'll see if I can find a better match. Posted 12 years ago, modified 12 years ago
    1. Thanks as always. I'm not on roll lately, misidentifying almost everything. Posted 12 years ago
      1. It looked very familiar... It is either Aglais urticae

        or Aglais io

        1. Thanks! Too bad I didnt get an open wing shot, it's quite beautiful. Posted 12 years ago
          1. Indeed, looking at more photos I think it's most probably the Peacock. The Small Tortoiseshell has brighter patches.

        2. Convincing match on the Peacock photo, so I updated the ID. Thanks for persisting! Posted 12 years ago
  3. Yet again an absolutely amazing insect, the wing pattern looks like a cross section of a tree. Great photo. Posted 12 years ago
