Mat Grass This is the grass that is a indicator of over-grazing on moorland, common land and higher pastureland. It survives the over-grazing where the more delicate grasses can't (a bit like cheat grass, I think, in the west of the USA). It is fairly easily identified as its seed heads only have seeds on one side. Cumbria,Matgrass,Nardus stricta,Swindale Click/tap to enlarge Species introCountry intro

"Nardus" is a genus of plants belonging to the grass family, containing the single species "Nardus stricta", known as matgrass. It is placed in its own tribe Nardeae within the subfamily Pooideae. The name derives from ancient Greek ' from the earlier Akkadian "lardu". It is not to be confused with spikenard, "Nardostachys jatamansi".
