Copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix)
Photo from Jason's cell phone on July 16. At a mixed forest edge, on a dirt road.
I had thought about driving down to get better photos, but I just couldn't bring myself to go down. I have been hesitant to even post this photo as it upset me so much. Jason went for his morning walk with our pup and came back with this photograph. It seems one of our neighbors killed/ran over a beautiful Copperhead snake. While I have seen them quite a few times in my lifetime (I even almost stepped on a baby one once), I have never had the opportunity to photograph a live one.
My heart still hurts knowing that this is probably the most common response to people seeing a snake. I wish they recognized the importance and value of these beautiful creatures.
