Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina) Young turtle at a mixed forest edge, near a seasonal stream. Appeared to be sleeping and slowly began responding to my voice. It then opened one eye, realized that I was there, and made the most adorable squeak/hiss whilst pulling its head into its shell!

For any experts:
Is it normal for young turtles to have eyes that are this puffy? I wasn't sure if it had a respiratory infection or if this is typical.
1. Aww, poor thing! It looks like an infection...I'm not an "expert", but I have seen this in rehab turtles before. Posted 4 years ago
    1. I just spoke with an expert on iNaturalist and he said it would be hard to tell without a culture...but that its left eye looks slightly more swollen than it should be. "It could be bacterial or mycoplasm". If I see it again, I may have to find a local rehab group to help. T_T It was so sweet and little. Posted 4 years ago
      1. I hope you find it. If untreated, it can cause blindness. Posted 4 years ago
