Hautmaske (Cassida stigmatica)
Close-up of the "Hautmaske" (skin mask) on a larva of Cassida stigmatica.
This camouflage shield consists of (only) the skins of the previous larval stadia. In each stadium the shield is carried on a tall "fork" dorsally at the end of the abdomen. The "fork" is part of the skin and hence also is stripped (including the old shield). So, after moulting, each previous skin is still attached/carried by the fork of the next skin.
