Wasp Beetle (Clytus arietis)
I think we can get a fair picture of how feared wasps are, not only at family picnics, but also in the natural world, by the number of species which mimic wasps in order to deter prey.
This is one such.
Look like a wasp, moves like a wasp, even sounds like a wasp, but it's a beetle.

Clytus arietis, the wasp beetle, is a wasp-mimicking longhorn beetle species in the genus Clytus. It reaches 9–18 millimetres (0.35–0.71 in) in length, and flies well in sunshine from May to July, often visiting flowers for pollen and nectar.
