Barred owl On a visit to the rehab station Wildlife Works Inc. in Youngwood, Pennsylvania, I saw this lovely barred owl, recuperating from an injury. Like all staff/volunteers across the globe, those at Wildlife Works Inc. do an amazing job with creatures that come through their doors.
The only sad thing about this shot is that one can see the cage bars in its eyes, but I remind myself, it was hopefully only a short time before this beautiful creature got to experience the wild again. Barred Owls live in large, mature forests made up of both deciduous trees and evergreens, often near water. They nest in tree cavities.
1. Always a favourite. Rehab is a necessary step. No doubt is flying free. Posted 4 years ago

  2. So special. Posted 4 years ago
  3. One of my favorite owls. I frequently hear them, especially when sleeping outside, and love their “Who cooks for you?" call. Posted 4 years ago
    1. How lovely! Slightly more romantic than our screeching, strident sulphur cockatoos lol Posted 4 years ago
      1. The first time I took my kids camping, they were terrified by the calls of this owl. My youngest said, "Are there monkeys in these woods?!" It took me awhile to convince them that it was just an owl. Although, monkeys would have been pretty cool too. Posted 4 years ago

The Barred Owl is a large typical owl native to North America. It goes by many other names, including Eight Hooter, Rain Owl, Wood Owl, and Striped Owl, but is probably best known as the Hoot Owl based on its call.
