  1. I saw a few of these today. Thanks for the species introduction because I would have identified it wrongly, since it looks indeed a lot like the black-tailed skimmer. Posted 12 years ago
    1. It took me a while before I was confident enough to identify them. Because they were within a couple of meters distance, I thought they would be the same species, but it turned out they were not. You really need to check a few features - the wings, the tail, the head etc. Posted 12 years ago

The Keeled Skimmer, ''Orthetrum coerulescens'', is a species of European dragonfly. This species resembles the Black-tailed Skimmer but is slimmer and the male has no black tip. Females and immature males lack the black abdominal pattern. The pterostigma is orange and the thorax usually bears pale stripes.
It breeds mainly in peat bogs and flies from June to September including places like Chudleigh Knighton Heath.
