  1. First UK report for the site as well! Posted 4 years ago
    1. It's a lovely reedbed reserve and when we only had 11 booming bitterns in the 90's, it hosted 1. This year it has at least 5 "booming" males. Bitterns are though extremely rare. Similar story for Marsh Harriers - only one nesting female in UK in 1971 - This year in the UK about 400 breeding pairs including 4 nests here. I'll put a couple of the harriers. Posted 4 years ago
      1. Do you also have a birding community in the UK where such sightings are shared and lead to a massive queue within the hour? Very much a thing over here. Posted 4 years ago
        1. Yes a "twichers" site, where suddenly 500 people turn up on top of a cliff somewhere - too stressful, there's enough to see locally & for variety - travel! Sometime ;¬{ Posted 4 years ago
          1. Yep, same thing here:

Note that "very rare" indicator on the homepage. Those kind of spottings sometimes trigger the spontaneous gatherings.

        2. That happens with owls out here... it stresses the poor birds out and prevents them from hunting (if they fly during the day) or sleeping (if they are night hunters)... Posted 4 years ago
          1. That's very bad. I think in case of important/rare/sensitive spottings, its best to obfuscate the geotag. Posted 4 years ago
            1. I would & do agree totally - Have a barn owl but will ensure it's registered as sensitive (they've nested in a box I put up in 1994 since then but I don't want the disturbance for them!!!
