  1. Can't believe we didn't have this species yet. Well done! I'd love more photos of it should you ever be in the circumstance :) Posted 12 years ago
    1. they are an amazing mix of animals with the duck bill in front to the beaver like tail at the back. They lay eggs in burrows and have no teats-but like other mammals they do produce milk, instead of suckling the young lap milk secreted from ducts opening on mother belly. They forage at night in murky water, their eyes and ears close when diving they find food through soft, touch -senstive bill. And very hard to get photos, but that adds to the fun as you know Posted 12 years ago, modified 12 years ago
      1. I couldn't agree more, really special creature. An exception in evolution. Posted 12 years ago
  2. Hi Graeme, nice shot this exceptional creature!
I see that some of your shots have timing issues given the difficult light at that moment. I can imagine it was tricky taking them!
My first lens was a cheap Canon 50mm f1.8 prime lens. It was made for difficult lighting, though without any zoom. If you don't already have it, it is a good and accessible accessory for your great DSLR.

    1. I am taking on board what you said. The main problem as you stated is the fact that the area is in total darkness and the tank is lit to let the platypus do what it dose in the wild, as in the photo they swim with their eyes closed. The second problem is as you said lens. I am hoping to get a better lens. Also I am hoping to talk with the powers to see if I can get some photos behind the scenes which would be in better light but not a natural look Posted 12 years ago
  3. Incredible creatures and I too would just love to see more pics! Posted 12 years ago

The platypus is a semiaquatic mammal endemic to eastern Australia, including Tasmania. Together with the four species of echidna, it is one of the five extant species of monotremes, the only mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth. It is the sole living representative of its family and genus , though a number of related species have been found in the fossil record.

The unusual appearance of this egg-laying, duck-billed, beaver-tailed, otter-footed mammal baffled European naturalists.. more
