Lesser Stag Beetle (Dorcus parallelipipedus)

I don't usually take my camera on a simple visit to my locally inconvenient convenience store, but yesterday I did.

On my return, sitting on my front garden wall, people passing by oblivious to its presence, was this male Lesser Stag beetle.

This of course, allowed me to whip my camera out and record the event before it flew off again.

  1. What a beauty, and it looks so pristine. Excellent supportive footage as always! Posted 4 years ago

It looks very fresh, but the colouring suggests it's a fairly mature male.

They get darker as they age, I think?

I love the little orange trimmings.

  3. Cool, I have always wanted to see one in Germany (where I live) but so far - no luck. Maybe I should start carrying a camera when I go shopping. Posted 4 years ago

I take my camera everywhere and that was a reminder why I should keep doing it :-)

  4. What a cutie <3! And, you made me giggle with your " inconvenient convenience store" comment ;P. Posted 4 years ago
    1. Haha!

It's like when they use the word 'convenience' for 'bathroom'.

They always seem to be remarkably convenient, right up to the moment one needs it. Then there's none to be found for miles!
