Lesser Stag Beetle (Dorcus parallelipipedus)
I don't usually take my camera on a simple visit to my locally inconvenient convenience store, but yesterday I did.
On my return, sitting on my front garden wall, people passing by oblivious to its presence, was this male Lesser Stag beetle.
This of course, allowed me to whip my camera out and record the event before it flew off again.
See the result, with species information (including how you can tell it's a male) here:

It looks very fresh, but the colouring suggests it's a fairly mature male.
They get darker as they age, I think?
I love the little orange trimmings.

I take my camera everywhere and that was a reminder why I should keep doing it :-) Posted 4 years ago
It's like when they use the word 'convenience' for 'bathroom'.
They always seem to be remarkably convenient, right up to the moment one needs it. Then there's none to be found for miles!
