Black White Colobus (Mantled guereza)
The myth around these guys is that they are the messenger of the gods, as they are going up and down the trees that they thought they were bringing message down. Unfortunately they are hunted for their fur to make ceremonial headdress and also the bush meat trade. The young are born white so they can hide on their mother but at 6 months they change to the same colour as adults.
The mantled guereza is a black-and-white colobus, a type of Old World monkey. It is native to much of west central and east Africa, including Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Chad.

Did you know that the colobus is one of only two monkeys that does not have a thumb? The other is the spider monkey, although it does still have a tiny tiny bone there. Posted 12 years ago
