Pony ant harvesting flowers My attention was caught by these tiny Lithodora diffusa flowers moving....and I was confused as there was no wind at all at that time.

I looked closer and saw a group of pony ants scrambling on the plant....as I continued to watch, I saw that they were working hard to disconnect the flowers from their stalks and endeavour to cart them away, presumably to the nest.

It was incredibly hard work, many times they dropped the flowers and sometimes there seemed to be scuffles and skirmishes between the ants - I imagined they were telling each other off for making a mistake perhaps. Tenacious little characters.
The green-head ant, ''Rhytidoponera metallica'', often simply referred to as the green ant, is a metallic-green coloured ant, generally 5–7 millimetres in length, that can be found throughout Australia, particularly in urban and suburban areas.
