Cumberland Spurge (Euphorbia mercurialina)? ID tentative.
Growing at a woodland edge. Leaves alternate, smooth, with ciliate edges. This plant has a superior ovary, meaning the central "female" inflorescence (called a cyathium) is surrounded by several smaller male flowers.

Edit: Went back for more leaf shots (my camera battery died), and it looked like deer or something had eaten the flowers completely!
1. It's so pretty and unusual! I just looked it up and the full flowers are gorgeous! Posted 4 years ago
    1. I've seen the flowers you are talking about. I'm not sure if these open up to that eventually? Or if there are just two forms? I found another spot with a couple of more flowers (that hadn't been ravaged by deer), so I'm crossing fingers and toes that they are still there this morning. It would be awesome to see that display!

Did you read about the special ovary above?
