Death's Head Hawk Moth Caterpillar (Acherontia styx?) I think this is Acherontia lachesis, but not 100% sure. Maybe A. styx? If anyone can distinguish the difference, please feel free to chime in - I am not an entomologist! Both species occur here in Vietnam, apparently. I have found them from May to August each of these past three years feeding on the jasmine on my balcony in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. 1. Hi Dave. What about Acherontia Styx. With A. lachesis could be a distribution problem ,A.styx has a distribution all through Vietnam and even further south . Posted 4 years ago
    1. Hi Ernst,
Thanks for the reply. As I said, I was only guessing - you probably know better than I do, I am no entomologist, that's for sure! ^^

"Acherontia styx" is a sphingid moth found in Asia, one of the three species of death's-head hawkmoth. It is very fond of honey, and bee keepers have reported finding dead moths in their hives as a result of bee stings. They can mimic the scent of bees so that they can enter a hive unharmed to get honey.
