2021/05/17 Death's Head Hawk Moth Caterpillar (Acherontia styx?) I find these every summer on my jasmine, one among many plants on my 17th floor balcony. So far this year, I have found four. They are beautifully patterned, but they are bee assassins, so I feel a little hostile toward them. Just my opinion. 1. Thanks for sharing this photo. Note that in JungleDragon, members are asked to include basic details as part of the photo, therefore please consider the following tip(s):

    - Please give your photo a meaningful title and description. You can do so using the "Edit details" button below the photo. It is recommended to include basics like the name of the species and the location in the title.

    - You did not share any location info. You are asked to at least share the country in which the photo was taken, since this helps in identifying the species. You can set the country using the "Set country" button. Even better is to geotag the photo, which you can do using the "Geotag this photo" button.

    - You did not identify the species on the photo. To identify the species, use the "Identify species" button. If you do not know the exact species, please share what you do know such as the location and family of species so that others can assist in exact species identification.

Note that by sharing your photo with more complete details, it will show up in the species browser, the global wildlife map and in search. It helps people find your photo much better, plus it delivers a far more educational photo. Check out our photo sharing tutorial for more information:

  2. Hi Ferdy,
Thanks. I am new here and on top of that, pretty much a luddite when it comes to computer tech. However, I will give it another try and hopefully it will work this time. ^ ^

"Acherontia styx" is a sphingid moth found in Asia, one of the three species of death's-head hawkmoth. It is very fond of honey, and bee keepers have reported finding dead moths in their hives as a result of bee stings. They can mimic the scent of bees so that they can enter a hive unharmed to get honey.
