  1. what are the things sticking out of the water? Posted 4 years ago
    1. Yellow pond lilies, Nuphar sp. I'm going to have to pick one at some point so I can ID it to species. This pond is so icky though -- lots of goo, debris, plants, rocks, and critters. It's as thick as stew. Posted 4 years ago

        1. Blargh for sure. I don't mind mucking through grossness as long as it doesn't come much above my knees. In fact, I kind of enjoy it. But, this pond would be too much. Posted 4 years ago

The painted turtle is the most widespread native turtle of North America. It lives in slow-moving fresh waters, from southern Canada to northern Mexico, and from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The turtle is the only species of the genus "Chrysemys", which is part of the pond turtle family Emydidae. Fossils show that the painted turtle existed 15 million years ago.
