  1. I spent most of yesterday trying to chase down various rarities that had been reported in the region, with absolutely zero success, until it was almost time to head home and I decided to make one last try, and was finally met with success with this friendly Red Knot, a pretty rare migrant through my area, and my first time seeing one in Europe! The red knot is a medium sized shorebird which breeds in tundra and the Arctic Cordillera in the far north of Canada, Europe, and Russia. It is a large member of the "Calidris" sandpipers, second only to the great knot. Six subspecies are recognised.
