  1. LOVE this! So, their eyes turn blue when molting? I found a mass of dead baby snakes once and they had blue eyes. I was never sure why. Maybe their eyes turn blue when they die as well. Posted 4 years ago
    1. Yes! Maybe they had been getting ready for a molt before death? Young snakes molt a lot more frequently than adults I know.
      From Brittanica.com:
"At this point, the snake’s eyes become a milky blue, an indication of a physiological loosening of the skin that forms the eye cap. This loosening is duplicated all over the body, although not so obviously. Shortly, the eyes clear, and the snake rubs loose the skin around the mouth and nose and crawls out of it completely, leaving a new, functional skin resplendent in fresh, bright colours."

      1. Neat! It's possible with the snakes I saw. They were murdered, poor babies. Posted 4 years ago
        1. Dead Northern Water Snake - Nerodia sipedon Sorry for the disturbing photo, but this is an example of what can happen when people act out of fear. This is a dead, baby northern water snake - I found a whole pile of baby snake chunks that had been hacked up. They were piled in the middle of a grassy area next to a pond. The parents (at least, I assume they were the parents) were alive and lingering nearby. These snakes nest in the area and I see them regularly. Unfortunately, many people fear them and kill them out of fear that they are venomous. The snakes are inncocent, however. I think these babies had been either purposely mowed over or else chopped and piled up. A sad sight, indeed.
