Pied butcher bird - Cracticus nigrogularis Then it spread out like this and I was sure that it was dead or at least very concussed. When I almost picked it up ,it got itself together and flew away. Yes I thought for a moment that there was something wrong with me. When I inspected more closely I noticed very small ants in the woodchips and realised that the butcherbird was just simply doing a bit of anting .The but herbird looked at me and just flew away. 1. What a cool encounter. And, a very odd bird. I'm glad it was okay! Posted 4 years ago

The pied butcherbird is a songbird native to Australia. Described by John Gould in 1837, it is a black and white bird 28 to 32 cm long with a long hooked bill. Its head and throat are black, making a distinctive hood; the mantle and much of the tail and wings are also black.
