Brave new world
At this small pond in the south of the Netherlands, hundreds if not thousands of tiny toads are struggling through the first days of their lives. They are as small as a flee, and one has to be careful not to step on them. They are always on hyper alert. Although tiny, any movement on my behalf, relatively far away, will trigger them to escape.

The European toad is an amphibian widespread throughout Europe, with the exception of Iceland, Ireland and some Mediterranean islands. Its easterly range extends to Irkutsk in Siberia and its southerly range includes parts of northwestern Africa in the northern mountains of Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia.
