Mitrula elegans, Swamp Beacon I have never heard of a plant or fungus being referred to as gregarious but this fungus definitely is! It was growing in a swamp next to another inhabitant of the swamp Western Skunk Cabbage. These are not quite as clean as I would have wished. The dirt is a result of a recent downpour that splashed the mud up onto the fungus. Canada,Geotagged,Mitrula elegans,Spring Click/tap to enlarge PromotedCountry intro

  1. I love finding these! Posted 3 months ago
    1. Rather new to me. They were a lot of them in a swamp where there were a lot of skunk cabbage. Not as pristine and clean as in your photos but a very similar habitat. Posted 3 months ago
      1. I have only seen them twice: once they were clean and growing in a stream. But, the second time, they were growing in a swamp and were filthy. The dirt adds character, in my opinion. Posted 3 months ago
        1. “Character”! I’ll try to remember that about dirt. Hah! The only time I have seen them has been in a swamp. They truly are “beacons” against the black mud. Posted 3 months ago

    1. Thank you Niel. They are colourful and although small they make quite an impressive showing because of their numbers. Gary Posted 3 months ago
