  1. Hi Christine,

I photographed some very similar mushrooms last week, and have been having a lot of difficulty determining what species of Hydnellum it is. Have you found any leads? I will post my photos here as well, I just made an account to respond to this!

    1. Hi,
I was just looking at your photos...I'm not sure what species it is, but agree that it looks like some sort of Hydnellum. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten any further with IDing my own observations. I asked one of our mushroom experts (Lisa Kimmerling), and she confirmed that Hydnellum is tricky to ID, but that the ones in your photos might be something similar to Hydnellum spongiosipes. Have you tried posting the photos on Mushroom Observer? Please feel free to share your photos here as well, though!

      1. Thanks for your reply Christine! I have never used mushroom observer! Learning to identify plants in the woods has been a fun hobby of mine for the last 3 years or so, but up until this point I have only used the app iNaturalist to post my findings. In the last few months, I have gotten really interested in fungi and will certainly check out Mushroom Observer! I'll post some more of my pictures here when I have the chance, I have lots. Thanks for your help. Posted 4 years ago
        1. You're welcome! My background is in entomology, but I am interested in and like to photograph all of nature. I got into mushrooms several years ago, but still rely on Mushroom Observer and mushroom groups on Facebook to help me with IDs. I look forward to seeing more of your photos!! Posted 4 years ago
          1. Christine, I got an ID on this mushroom that we both found! Phellodon confluens. Look it up and see what you think! It's a match from what I can tell. Posted 4 years ago
            1. Oh wow! I think that looks right! Yay! Thanks for looking into it. Posted 4 years ago, modified 4 years ago

''Phellodon confluens'', commonly known as the fused cork hydnum, is a species of tooth fungus in the family Bankeraceae. It was originally described in 1825 as ''Hydnum confluens'' by Christiaan Hendrik Persoon. Czech mycologist Zdenek Pouzar transferred it to the genus ''Phellodon'' in 1956. The fungus is found in Asia, Europe, and North America. It is considered vulnerable in Switzerland.
