Giant bulldog ant
On this day, I saw two separate mating frenzies occurring on paved areas around my house.
There are around 90 species of bulldog ant within genus Myrmecia, found throughout this country and outlying islands. This specimen has been identified at entomologist level as Myrmecia brevinoda, native to our east coast region. These ants typically nest outdoors in soil and under logs and rocks - some over-ground mounds associated with nests have been recorded at 80 cm in height.
These ants are some of the largest in the world, this specimen being around 40 mm in length. Whenever watching and particularly photographing these ants, I am as quick as possible due to them being extremely defensive, fast and with a formidable pincer-bite and sting. This one had rushed at my camera twice already and I thought if my third attempt isn't successful, I'm giving up!

''Myrmecia brevinoda'' is a species of bull ant which is only native to Australia. These ants are only found in the eastern Australian states of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and the Australian Capital Territory. It was first discovered in 1910.
