The Complexities of a Lichen
I will admit to being a sucker for bright colours, red, in this case, even if it involves getting my knees and elbows wet in the spongy moss. But after looking at the photograph I am amazed at how complex a structure is sitting atop the heavily squamulose podetia of this Floral Pixie (Cladonia bellidiflora) lichen. Have just read that one of the methods of spreading its kind other than spores is when one of those squamules breaks off and is carried afar to an appropriate growing site.
This “cup” is about 3.5mm across.
