This lovely scene epitomizes the beauty of the southwestern United States! And, it features the incredible Colorado pinyon (Pinus edulis) -- a drought-resistant tree that is renowned for its edible seeds, pine nuts.
Pine nuts are extensively harvested for consumption throughout their range. The seeds are dispersed naturally by the pinyon jay (Gymnorhinus cyanocephalus), who plucks them out of the cones. This is a crucial relationship because pine nuts are heavy, wingless seeds that can’t be spread by the wind. Therefore, their dispersal is dependent on birds, animals, and even humans. {Spotted in Arizona, USA by NattyOne} #JungleDragon #ColoradoPinyon #Pinusedulis #PineNut
