Eurasian Wren (Troglodytes troglodytes)
A very common bird, although it often goes unnoticed as it hides among flocks of Sparrows in the garden.
One thing you can't help but notice, if you catch it in full voice, is its amazing vocal abilities.
As this video demonstrates, a couple of tiny Wrens can fill the woods with joyous song................

The Eurasian Wren is a very small bird, and the only member of the wren family Troglodytidae found in Eurasia. In Anglophone Europe, it is commonly known simply as the Wren. It was once lumped with "Troglodytes hiemalis" of eastern North America and "Troglodytes pacificus" of western North America as the Winter Wren.

It's because the Eurasian Wren and the two North American Wrens were once classified as a single species, commonly known as the Winter Wren.
One of them Troglodytes hiemalis is still known by that name.
In Ireland, Dec 26th used to be designated Wren day, when they were hunted to atone for accidentally betraying one of the saints. I can't remember which? Probably, Stephen, Bob, or Rita? Posted 4 years ago
