Macracantha arcuata, head, Heesch, Netherlands Old low quality specimen, sorry.

This is a 7:1 macro of the head of a female Macracantha arcuata, which are known for their lengthy spiny horns on the abdomen. Besides that, there's the pretty face as seen above.

The massive jaw-like structures are the chelicerae, consisting of a base and in the bottom the fangs. There are different types of chelicerae depending on species, apparently this one is called a "jackknife".
1. It's irresistible isn't it :) Posted 4 years ago
  2. Those chelicerae are phenomenal, they take up almost all of the face. Incredibly chunky seen this way, their relation to the rest of the area. What awesome photography and intriguing little specimen. Posted 4 years ago
    1. I was quite surprised about the face myself, without magnification the horns are definitely the eye-catcher of this species. Posted 4 years ago
