  Was popularised by a german film in 1996 "Faszination Natur" and was almost unknown in the USA. It has since become a bucket list item but access was very limited; by access permit (for 10 total available for each day by lottery 4 months before the date and then another 10 available for next day by lottery from the Bureau of Land Management office at 09.00hrs at Kanab, in person ). Access still required determination and not a little skill to get there. In the summer when we went, the intense heat, the thunderstorms and the ability to use a compass (also very little mobile signal, although I still don't have one of those). I think 3 people died of heat exhaustion in 2014. Posted 4 years ago

      That was our experience & actually managed to get through the lottery successfully twice (2008 & 2020) - it was easier for the hot months. Cheers Posted 4 years ago
