Black Vulture at Antwerp zoo

This likely is a female, as it seems to be nesting. It caught it exactly in the moment where it was blinking.

  1. This is the Eurasian Black Vulture (Aegypius monachus), not the American Black Vulture :) Posted 12 years ago
    1. Thanks. I figured it was strange that the one I saw in Brazil was so different from this one. In this case I used the sign in the zoo for identification, which simply called it "Black Vulture". Hence, the mistake. Posted 12 years ago
      1. This bird is considered extinct in Bulgaria. Some individuals are spotted every now and then visiting some feeding sites. There are several conservation projects for the vultures in different regions and so far the population of griffon vultures is slowly starting to recover in the Eastern Rodope Mountains. Actually, we visited the area last month and photographed a few griffon vultures. They were quite far away so the photos are not very sharp, but I will try to choose a few decent ones to show you later on. Hopefully, the black vultures will follow next. One bird has appeared in a feeding site in the Balkan Mountains this year.

        1. Good to hear about the recovery, and I am curious about your photos. Don't forget, Claire is running a thread where you suggest or vote for a wildlife cause that we will donate to:

The Cinereous Vulture is a large raptorial bird that is distributrved through much of Eurasia. It is a member of the family Accipitridae, which also includes many other diurnal raptors such as kites, buzzards and harriers. It is one of the two largest old world vultures.
