Eurasian Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) This one took me totally by surprise, and I was lucky to recover in time to get this short video (repeated in slo-mo), because I have always associated the Kingfisher with rivers and lakes, not a man-made seaside Marina.
But there was no mistaking that incredible in-flight speed and colouring.
1. Yes, the location is intriguing! Fantastic sighting Philip. Do you know, I grew up in Dorset and all the years I spent in the woodlands and close to rivers/streams I never saw one of these, not once. Posted 4 years ago

I have seen a couple before.

By "seen", I mean in the manner of 'seeing' money disappear from my bank account.

I expected it to be there.

      It was there.

      Then in a split-second flash!

      It wasn't.

The Common Kingfisher is a small kingfisher with seven subspecies recognized within its wide distribution across Eurasia and North Africa. It is resident in much of its range, but migrates from areas where rivers freeze in winter.
