
Coccinella septempunctata is the most common ladybird in Europe. Its elytra are of a red colour, but punctuated with three black spots each, with one further spot being spread over the junction of the two, making a total of seven spots, from which the species derives both its common and scientific names.

This is an eclosure gone south ...
The beetle tried to emerge from the pupa but got stuck. One or more of the elytra/wings stuck to the exuviae and the beetle couldn't pull itself loose. So it was stuck in place as the process of pumping up the wings, hardening and gaining colour continued. If it still gets pulled loose now, it will will be damaged for life (elytra and wings warped), but it may well just die in place as if it is unable to free itself.
