  3. Fascinating siphonophore, with its four specialised parts, each responsible for its own task. Twice I've seen my local beaches here covered after they've washed up from rough seas and last year up in Queensland, (over just one weekend), almost 2,500 people were treated for stings from these bluebottles as we call them. I remember the news piece very well, 23 years living here and I'd never heard of stats like that. Posted 4 years ago

The Portuguese man o' war, also known as the man-of-war, is a marine hydrozoan found in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. It is one of two species in the genus "Physalia", along with the Pacific man o' war, "Physalia utriculus". Its long tentacles deliver a painful sting, which is venomous and powerful enough to kill fish and even humans.
