A Dark-eyed Junco! It seems that there are many subspecies and I am quite sure that having seen many colour variations in our neighbourhood that ID is difficult. This fellow is close to what is called an “Oregon” Dark-eyed Junco with the scientific name being Junco hyemalis and the ssp name being, take your pick, oreganus, montanus, or shufeldti. 1. Perfect shot! And oh my goodness! That is a lot of ssp names! Can they not decide on just one? Posted 4 years ago
    1. Consensus... so hard to come to! Ha! Posted 4 years ago
  2. Cool! I had no idea there were different subspecies and color variations for this species. I had a whole bunch of juncos at my bird bath this morning. They are fun to watch :). Posted 4 years ago
    1. Yes, fun to watch. They come to our suet feeders and are quite the scrappy bunch pushing out the smaller chickadees and the lone nuthatch that tries to visit. Posted 4 years ago
      1. "Scrappy" is the perfect word to describe Juncos. I love the chickadees though bc they are seriously adorable. Also, I get a lot of wrens and find them to be very curious and perky. I rarely see nuthatches, but like watching them march up and down trees. Posted 4 years ago
        1. Yes, we like the chickadees as well. The ones we have here are the Chestnut-backed Chickadee. Another common but not necessarily frequent visitor is the Spotted Towhee. Have to say it is the largest bird at our protected suet blocks. Posted 4 years ago
          1. Sounds lovely! Posted 4 years ago
            1. In these times it keeps us entertained! Posted 4 years ago
              1. Definitely. I find myself birdwatching with my cats most mornings lately. Posted 4 years ago
                1. Good to have company. Posted 4 years ago

The dark-eyed junco is a species of junco, a group of small, grayish New World sparrows. This bird is common across much of temperate North America and in summer ranges far into the Arctic. It is a very variable species, much like the related fox sparrow, and its systematics are still not completely untangled.
