Noble False Widow (Steatoda nobilis) Over the last few years of mild winters, this spider, one of four False Widows in the UK & allegedly our most venomous, has become the spider I see the most in and around my house.

It's an unfair reputation, as it's only ever likely to bite in self-defence. So the trick is, never challenge it to a duel.

It's also generally nocturnal, hiding away during the day. The exact opposite to what this fellow (it's a male) was doing perched in full view atop my Ivy at midday.
1. Nice "best friends" video :) Posted 4 years ago
  2. UPDATE: I'm no expert on spiders but it appears this video is showing some unexpected behaviour, with a number of more informed people than I telling me they had not before witnessed 'bridging behaviour' from a Noble False Widow. Bridging is a technique used by spiders for web construction. The spider produces a silk thread that is carried by the wind and becomes attached to an object, forming a bridge. Here for example the Spider eventually managed to bridge the gap between two Ivy flower heads, on a blustery day too. Posted 4 years ago
  3. Wow, incredible video. As you say, lucky to see a falsey outside during the day and especially to witness this.
I have quite a lot living outside, but all very shy and hardly even see them at night. Unfortunately none in the house at all. Nice one Philip!

"Steatoda nobilis" is a spider in the genus "Steatoda", known in the United Kingdom as the noble false widow, as it superficially resembles and is frequently mistaken for the black widow and other spiders in the genus "Latrodectus". It is often referred to as "the" false widow, although "false widow" is a more general term applied to a wider group of species with this resemblance. It is a moderately medically significant spider, with most bites resulting in symptoms similar to a bee or wasp sting... more
