Noble False Widow (Steatoda nobilis)
Over the last few years of mild winters, this spider, one of four False Widows in the UK & allegedly our most venomous, has become the spider I see the most in and around my house.
It's an unfair reputation, as it's only ever likely to bite in self-defence. So the trick is, never challenge it to a duel.
It's also generally nocturnal, hiding away during the day. The exact opposite to what this fellow (it's a male) was doing perched in full view atop my Ivy at midday.

"Steatoda nobilis" is a spider in the genus "Steatoda", known in the United Kingdom as the noble false widow, as it superficially resembles and is frequently mistaken for the black widow and other spiders in the genus "Latrodectus". I have quite a lot living outside, but all very shy and hardly even see them at night. Unfortunately none in the house at all. Nice one Philip! Posted 4 years ago
