  1. Can't believe you were holding this back!

(Probably because you were too busy, but still...)

    1. Hi Ferdy, combination of factors I suppose. Very "mediocre" images of the few Collembola I shot on La Palma (didn't pay too much attention or put effort in it either as I was mostly "out in the field" with the DCR250 lens screwed on, not the MSN202 that I would need for better results with these. That, and then there is the issue of spending time on trying to find an ID ... while there is plenty of other things to waste time on too ;o) Posted 4 years ago
      1. Totally understand. Just 2 or 3 species or so that I started to photograph took me a huge amount of time in total. It's hard work!

The mediocre images thing is non-sense though, and you know it.

        1. Well, I've never seen myself as a "photographer", but rather just someone using photos to document species etc., but even for a non-photographer this here image is below par for documenting purposes - more than half the critter out of focus *rolleyes*.
Browsed through loads and loads of images of this quality level (and _MUCH_ worse) in the past days to find just a few per species that are halfway recognizable - disappointing exercise. But I only had a grand total of 1 image for this one, so there it is ;o)

          1. Photography merely as a tool to document species...nothing wrong with that. Although it is selling yourself short. You do have an eye for the artistic shot, and these approaches are not mutually exclusive. If anything, here on JD, you often see them come together.

As for this case, it goes without saying that we're not in an ordinary situation here. Having about 1 in dozens of shots in focus for these creatures seems to be the norm. And the good shots still not having everything in focus as well. It's hardly possible at all, optically and skill-wise to do better. And you seem to be doing it handheld even, which is absurdly difficult.

So getting that 1 usable shot is awesome!

            1. Okay Ferdy - I'll concede : I'm awsome! Or at least I was for one moment there during my vacation on La Palma ;o) Posted 4 years ago
              1. You clearly are awesome in general. You've contributed almost 2,500 well described images of super cool species, introduced 550 new ones, many stocking categories entirely empty before. You document keys in detail and/or provide excellent references. You help others, and are always polite and constructive. You share your images with generous licenses. You help with moderation.

All of this probably amounts already to a few thousand hours of effort combined.

It's no small deal. It's a top notch contribution and role model behavior. Not normal, not average, it's highest end. And with every little drip you add to the bucket, the sum value keeps growing. If that's not awesome, I don't know what is.

And I'll stop it there, before it gets to your head.
