Populations of small, brown, antpittas, occurring at high elevations from Venezuela to Bolivia used to be lumped under the name Rufous Antpitta, despite fantastic vocal differences between populations, which had led people to suspect for a long time that several species were actually involved. After a lot of work, which culminated in two massive papers published earlier this year, the complex has now been split into 12 species! This is one of them :) Posted 4 years ago

The Junín Antpitta is a newly described species of Antpitta, previously considered part of the Rufous Antpitta complex, and recently given species status based on analysis of vocalizations and genetic data.
It is endemic to a small region of the Andes of Central Peru, mainly in the department of Junín, hence its common name.
