Dicyrtomina ornata is one of the small "globular" Springtails (Collembola) from the family Dicyrtomidae. Within its distribution range it is easily found in leaf litter from late fall to early spring. It can be confused with other species of Dicyrtomina, most notably with D. saundersi.
Similar species: Symphypleona

This was probably just my "workhorse" setup with the old 8Mpx Fuji S5800 bridge camera and a Raynox MSN202, or maybe (?) this was the Raynox MSN505 that I got for my birthday a while back, but at this size of "model" both do about equally well. The MSN505 mostly gives some extra range for playing around with smaller details such as a close-up of the eye of one of these or some such.
I have a set/bunch of all the same cameras with a Raynox DCR250, MSN202 and MSN505 with various make-shift "diffusers" (modified yoghurt containers) standing by and switch between these on any photo shoot, so I loose track which image is shot with what setup exactly *rolleyes*.
Currently I'm totally swamped with work and haven't had any time to play around with some stacking setup or the other, so all images are still just "single shots". Posted 4 years ago, modified 4 years ago
And most importantly, browsing around the last days for online images, seems almost every springtail image should be cherished, there's not that many. So an eye level magnification is even more unique. Posted 4 years ago
As for good Collembola macros: I'm sure you've stumbled on the site of my friend Jan van Duinen before, but just in case: http://www.janvanduinen.nl/collembola.html
No way I'm going to manage his image/magnification quality, but it is always fun to tease him a little with coming fairly close (on occasion) with my low-end setup :-P Posted 4 years ago
I've always been impressed by how much you squeeze out of your equipment. Yet this example is extra special in it simply being out of reach, at least for me. No matter the camera, tripod, light...anything.
Yes, Jan's site seems very authoritative. One of a kind. Let me add this one:

Poor timing because it just went into maintenance mode. Anyway, it's a french guy with a huge article on springtails, great info, lots of photos, illustrations, etc. And at the end of that article (once it gets back up), he has a list of resources with a handful of absolutely stunning photo collections. Rare to come by.
Don't tell me you drink coffee with his wife, or something like that.

No, just kiddin' ... actually I had never stumbled on the site before - will check it out when they're back online. Now, doesn't that put your mind at ease? ;o)
> Likes of you ... etc
Well, Ferdy, I meet a lot of "nature enthousiasts with a camera" and obviously most are not even playing in the same league. Surely, if you aim to select a specialist niche, such as ultra macro stacking, macros of a specialist group like Collembola or some such, there will always be someone to look up to, but generally speaking ... I look up to you ;o) Posted 4 years ago

Sorry, don't remember if that option was there before. To me the English was understandable even if not perfect. Posted 4 years ago
