The elegant Eurasian oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus) is the most widespread species of oystercatcher! Its range includes Europe, Asia, and northern Africa. They often gather in large flocks and are an important indicator species of the health of the ecosystem in which they congregate.
Their black and white plumage and striking red bill, eyes, and legs make them distinctive among other wading birds. These shorebirds can be found in saltmarshes, estuaries, and mudflats, in addition to other coastal locations.
Despite their name, they don't merely feast on oysters, although they do eat a lot of bivalves! They also eat crabs, urchins, worms, jellyfish, and insect larvae. They use their long bills as probes to locate prey by touch and then hammer them to crack open the shells!{Spotted in the UK by JungleDragon user, NattyOne} #JungleDragon #oystercatcher #Eurasianoystercatcher #Haematopusostralegus
