Sheathed Woodtuft or Changeable Pholiota The common name Changeable Pholiota comes from the synonym Pholiota mutabilis which I believe is no longer accepted. It&rsquo;s hard to keep up! This group were growing on the side of a decaying alder stump.<br />

  2. WOW! These look so close to Armillaria sp.! I'm guessing the substrate is one way to differentiate? Did you see any spores here? Posted 4 years ago
    1. Lisa, spores! Me? That’s funny. Just checking and it seems that most of the Honey (Armillaria) mushrooms around here all have much smoother stems. Posted 4 years ago

''Kuehneromyces mutabilis'' , commonly known as the sheathed woodtuft, is an edible fungus which grows in clumps on tree stumps or other dead wood. A few other species have been described in the genus ''Kuehneromyces'', but ''K. mutabilis'' is by far the most common and best known.
