Euonymus americanus has many common names, including Hearts-a-Bustin', Hearts-bustin'-with-love, and Bursting Heart. Notice a trend? This shrub is native to the eastern United States, especially in moist, hilly, southeastern woodlands. It produces small, humbly beautiful flowers in the spring and spectacular, raspberry-red, bumpy seed capsules in the fall.
And, every autumn, this shrub puts on a surreal show as the seed capsules burst open to reveal bright orange seeds! And, hence we have multiple common names that allude to this bursting open of the seed capsules...or 'bustin' as they say in the South! {Spotted in Georgia, USA by JungleDragon moderator, Lisa Kimmerling} #JungleDragon #Euonymusamericanus #HeartsaBustin
