  ah, yes, this is the encrusting sponge on top of the clam. The center of the "craters" are the oscula (large opening to the outside through which the current of water exits):

  I ahve some nice pics of encrusting sponges in the same area of the world but I am trying to find their species first. Sponges can be very hard to identify. Scientist will not dare without a proper molecular analysis but here we try to propose tentative IDs based on morphology :-) Posted 4 years ago
