1. This delightful fluffball is the smallest passerine in the world, with only a handful of hummers being smaller. It weighs 4 grams!
This was a very satisfying encounter for me because I'm actually a very handicapped birder, in that my auditory memory is absolute garbage and I struggle terribly to memorize bird songs. But once in a blue moon, I will recognize something in the field that I've previously heard in a recording and actually match it to a species! This is what happened here when somehow a faint insect-like trill rang a bell in my mind. Half-convinced my mind was playing tricks on me, I played a snippet on my phone and, lo and behold, this feathered bumblebee immediately appeared over my head to defend its territory!

    1. 4 grams! Wow! Posted 4 years ago
      1. I actually think 4 gram is grossly overweight.

Wire-crested thorntail - perched, Putumayo, Colombia Opening a somewhat strange day in our travel program where we would go halfway up the Trampoline of Death (a steep road connecting Mocoa and la Cocha), then go back down to Mocoa, only to fully traverse the Trampoline of Death the day after. So effectively we'd do the first half twice. Ah well...

The appeal of this road, other than needing to take it to go to some places, is that it takes you rapidly through big elevation changes. This brings opportunities for some road-side birding as well as finding the occasional butterflies.
As the Wikipedia description says, this is one of the smallest birds on the planet, weighing only 2.5 grams. This is the male of the species, because it has a crest. This one was seen here before, so we waited it out. Even at 10m or so of distance, I failed to capture a lot of detail, simply because it is so tiny.
The short-tailed pygmy tyrant is a small species of tyrant-flycatcher. The species is one of the smallest birds on Earth and the smallest passerine. Among both the family and the order, only the closely related black-capped pygmy tyrant approaches similarly diminutive sizes. The pygmy tyrant is widespread throughout most of the Amazon in northern and central South America.
