Cassius Blue Leptotes cassius This Butterfly appeared in the garden this morning, liking the asters. The wings have a tiger pattern, and there was a slight orange color around the two larger circles on the wing. The color may be slightly distorted because a strong sun was whining through the wings.<br />

  1. You're definitely in the right family. As for genus, Plebejus looks close, but from what I can tell, most species in that genus have fairly strong orange bands in the wings.

My closest guess is "Echinargus isola". It has the 2 eyes in the bottom of the wing, and is very often reported in Texas. However, I'm not 100% sure, as in your photo the rest of the wing seems more spotted. So Echinargus isola could be close or a full match based on variability.

I recommend a second opinion, as I'm not really a true expert :)

    1. Someone in inaturalist gave me this ID. Take a look at these links - also found in Texas

      1. Excellent, a much stronger match than my suggestion. Looks convincing, feel free to ID. Posted 4 years ago

          1. As do I. Just read that you're in the most butterfly-diverse state of the US.
            No pressure ;)

            1. I look forward to seeing what's outside every morning. I hope to continue finding something new, if not for the site, for me to learn. Identifying a new species for the site is a bonus! : ) Posted 4 years ago
